Building a practice space at home

Start with the room, not the product. A corner for barre and turns needs a practice mat you can unroll and put away. A spare room or garage becomes a real studio with a kit: marley, cushioning and tape sized to the space. And if you already have a firm, flat floor, a cut-to-length roll is the cheapest way to cover it properly.

Two rules from our support inbox. First, concrete needs cushioning before anyone jumps on it; that is what a sprung subfloor is for. Second, marley needs a rigid base, so over carpet start with tiles instead.

What is the smallest real setup?

A 5.25 by 5 foot practice mat, from $114.99. It is the same vinyl as our studio rolls, sized for a bedroom corner, and it rolls up between sessions.

I live in an apartment. What about noise?

Soft-shoe practice on marley is quiet. What travels to neighbors is impact, so put cushioning underneath before drilling jumps, and keep percussive work to tap tiles over a foam base.

Can I leave it down permanently?

Yes. Tape the perimeter and seams for a semi-permanent install, and sweep plus damp mop to keep the surface right. Our care guide covers the details.
